ELLA ebook

The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls
within a few short weeks.

Except it wasn't flu and death gave them back.

Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can; caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. ‘Vermin’ they're called, like rats they spread pestilence with their bite. Ella's world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger, who is very much alive.

Seth deMage, the new Duke of Leithfield, has returned to his ancestral home with a mission from the War Office — to control the plague of vermin in rural Somerset. He needs help; he just didn't expect to find it in a katana-wielding scullery maid.

Working alongside Seth blurs the line between their positions, and Ella glimpses a future she never dreamed was possible. But in overstepping society's boundaries, Ella could lose everything – home, head and her heart…

So I do love a book that involves the undead but usually they are roaming about in the present time or a near dystopian future, I have never read a book where they are roaming about in the past.

It is the early part of the twentieth century, the first world war has ended, flu has ravaged the world's population killing millions, it has also brought many back to life.

Ella lives with her father, who was injured in the war, her step mother and two step sisters, like a certain fairy tale princess she is beautiful but put to work by her cruel step mother.

Ella is no pushover, she is a katana wielding, zombie killing machine, she calls them "Vermin", every day she patrols and gets rids of these deadly creatures.

One day a creature takes her aback, he talks back, she has very nearly decapitated the local duke, Seth deMage who is definitely not a vermin, he sees something in Ella that intrigues him but he is a duke and a duke needs to make good connections.

The only connection they make to begin with is trying to get rid of the undead together but will they both see what is in front of them or will all those zombies (and the wicked stepmother) get in the way of true love!

This is a wonderful retelling of Cinderella, I won't reveal any spoilers for you but we all know how Cinderella goes.  What I love about this book is that it covers so many genres, historical, horror, fantasy and that cover is beautiful it could give The Selection a run for it's money.

An enjoyable read!
