Written by John Allison (Bad Machinery, Scary Go Round) and illustrated by Max Sarin, Giant Days Volume 5 finishes off freshman year in style, collecting issues #17-20 of the Eisner Award-nominated series. Their freshman year is finally coming to a close and Daisy, Susan, and Esther say goodbye to Catterick Hall forever. Literally forever. It’s being bulldozed and re-purposed as a luxury dorm next semester. But as one door closes, another opens and between end of semester hookups, music festivals, and moving into their first home together, their life experiences are just getting started.
To recap our lovely trio of ladies are...
- Susan Ptolemy - The one with the most common sense, she keeps the other two on the straight and narrow (most of the time), she’s a bit of a slob and you’ll be happy to learn she’s studying medicine!
- Esther de Groot - Goth goddess, fashion icon, attractor of men and women, drama queen, accident prone, student of English lit. Loyal friend. Life of the party.
- Daisy Wooton - She is said to 50% hair and 100% not ready for this world, she is sweet and innocent, raised by her loving granny. She is struggling a little with her sexuality and is definitely not prepared for drinking and partying. Archaeology student.
Volume 5 takes us to a music festival and moves us in to a new home with a few detours on the way!
Reviewing all of these volumes I don’t want my reviews to become to repetitive so I’m going to share my five favourite moments of this volume.
#1
Mild mannered Daisy exploding at her condescending Archaeology tutor reducing him to tears!
#2
Their trip to IKEA and the resulting trying to get their furniture back home on the bus!
#3
Esther and Ed finding themselves unwittingly in an exam cheating ring!
#4
The girls trip to a music festival where Esther falls in love with the lead singer of Poison Nebula (he is a spunk apparently), Daisy parties down to World Music and Susan gets drugged.
#5
Susan putting on her detective hat and staging andundercover visit to spy on McGraw’s new girlfriend
It is still great, its still funny and I still want to be friends with them!
On to volume 6!
I just might want to meet these girls!
