Hello everyone, hoping you are well.
Not much to report this week, all is quiet which isn’t a bad thing. Homeschooling seems to be going well and the transition to working from home seems to be working well too.
As I write this it is the 30th of January and my book purchases have been zero - I have taken delivery of a book this week but as I preordered it in 2020 I’m taking the view that it is a 2020 purchase! So one month down, eleven to go. I’m feeling positive about it!
The weather here has been up and down like a yo-yo but that yo-yo is only going a little bit over freezing. I stupidly got caught out by black ice when I was walking the dog this week and now have a fetching bruise on my knee. Does anyone else quickly look around to see if any one caught your misfortune?
I’m still watching The Stand and really enjoying it, I’m rewatching The Office I think for the fourth time (I have it on in the background whilst I work) and I’m watching Life in Pieces which I adore. I keep getting told to watch WandaVision, I’m not sure as these characters aren’t high on my list of favourite Marvel characters built I see Kathryn Hahn is in it and I love her.
Have a lovely safe week x

(A paperback copy - Pre-ordered in 2020 so therefore exempt from my challenge!)

I look upon my book purchases as a way to help small bookstores during the pandemic. I do have a general rule of keeping books for a year and then reading or giving them away. I also have been known to buy a 1.99 ebook or two....
ReplyDeleteMy sister and her husband introduced us to The Office when we went to Sedona last year. It's quite pointed humor. I imagine, though, that you are watching the British version and we the American. I wonder how different they are.
Oh dear. Black ice. I'm sorry it knocked you off your feet. We might see a little ice on our bird bath once or twice a winter, and that's about it. We make up for our delightful ice-less-ness with lots of hurricanes, though.
No I’m watching the American version, I prefer it to the UK version, it’s a bit too cringe for me. I love the US version, I think I’m on my third watch of it!
DeleteCongrats on going a whole month without buying a book! I've already preordered four or five this year, I know, that's bad. 😬 Hope you have a good week😁
ReplyDeleteIt’s not bad at all, needs must!
DeleteWay to go not buying any books! And yes, a pre-order definitely counts as 2020 purchase. Which version of The Office do you watch? My sister's children are obsessed with that show (the US version)
ReplyDeleteIt’s the US version, I tried the UK version years ago and it was so cringe I couldn’t watch it which is how I took so long to watch the US one. I love it especially Dwight!
DeleteI didn't buy any books in December, so I made up for it by buying eight this month. :D Glad you doing well despite the cold and the black ice. Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI dread to think what I’ll be like when January comes! I’m putting aside £10 a month for my splurge come the new year.
DeleteBuying books is my deadliest sin. I can't fit them in anywhere so now I mostly buy e-books, which is not really what's happening. You buy the right to have the book on your kindle (or kindle app) until amazon.com decides you won't have it any more, or until you aren't an amazon subscriber any more, or --morbidly-- until you die. If amazon finds out you are dead your kindle dies too. sad story!
ReplyDeletebe safe... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I knew about Amazon but I parked it in the dark recess of mind, it’s annoying that is the case isn’t it, you pay for it, you’d expect to keep it.
DeleteUgh! I've fallen on ice while walking our dog (several years ago) and it really hurts! I hope you didn't cause any damage to your knee. :(
ReplyDeleteI rarely buy print books anymore (I do, however, get a lot of audiobooks with my Audible and Libro.fm memberships), but I broke down and bought three last week. Two are for book club and one was an impulse purchase after reading so many great reviews on Instagram. That one is Untamed by Glennon Doyle. I know I'll get to the first two right away, but it will be interesting to see how long Doyle's book sits on my shelves. Hopefully, not too long!
I've never heard of Life in Pieces, but it looks a little bit like Parenthood, a series I loved! Thanks for the reminder to watch The Stand. I hear the new series is much better than the previous one.
Have a good week, Heather!
No I just ended up with a big bruise thankfully, I’ve got grippy things for my shoes now to stop any mishaps in the future.
DeleteI’ve heard a lot of good things about Untamed, it’s a beautiful looking book hopefully it’s a good on the inside!
Life in Pieces is excellent, there is only four seasons but it’s good fun.
I have yet to finish watching The Office! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI’m on my third watch of it!
DeleteHaha, I fell on black ice while running a few years ago, and I definitely looked around to make sure no one saw. Good luck with your book buying ban! I don’t think I could be strong enough to do that.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I’m halfway in to February and it’s going ok, I hope I can last to the end of the year.
DeleteI'm so glad the transition to work from home and homeschool is going so smoothly. The Office is such a great background show (and just in general) and I LOVE Life In Pieces. The first season especially was hilarious. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt’s nice background noise to have, I’ll just keep watching it till I get fed up but I’m on my third rewatch and I still love it. It was difficult to watch Life in Pieces, season one and two where widely available but had to wait for the last two series to stream.
DeleteExcept for one or two sales on BookBub, I also haven't bought any new books this year. Was very tempted on Thursday though, thought the smell and feel of a new book would make me feel better. But I restrained myself and couldn't be prouder!
ReplyDeleteWould love to hear your thoughts on Home before Dark. Still want to read that one.
And yes, I also look around to see if everyone saw my misfortune when it occurs. Quite often actually...!
Have a good week Heather!
Elza Reads
I’m not entering any bookshops (well I can’t because they are closed!) to sniff or window shop because I’ll get caught out by something pretty!
DeleteHome Before Dark is ok but I’m dipping in and out of it, it’s not gripping me enough to devour it!
Yes I've done that! Fallen and looked around to see who caught it- then oh yeah am I okay? lol
ReplyDeleteHope it's not too painful though! WandaVision starts off kinda slow but I think it's going to be a trip.
I might give it a try, the Winter Soldier and Falcon trailer has started doing the rounds now, too much to watch!
DeleteHome Before Dark looks like a good thriller. Great cover!
ReplyDeleteIt’s been an ok read so far!
DeleteOh man. Good luck with your goal of not purchasing anything this year! It takes discipline, to be sure. I know you can do it!!! You got this.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
A month and a half down, It’s hard!
DeleteI think I only bought one book last year which was a book for my book club because I didn't think my hold would ever come in (it came in the same day the book I ordered was delivered). The Cat and the Corpse in the Old Barn looks cute.
ReplyDeleteThe Cat and the Corpse was a great read, my review is up soon!
DeleteEbooks are easier to hide ;)
ReplyDeleteOuch..sorry about the fall, the last time I slipped over people seemed to go out of their way to pretend they didn’t see me at all
Wishing you a great reading week
They are much easier to hide!!
DeleteI haven't really bought a book, other than cookbooks and gifts, in a long time. I use the library all the time for my e-books. I do love browsing in bookstores, but they have mostly been closed during our lockdowns, other than a few months last summer, sigh!
ReplyDeleteI was very careful the other day watching out for ice!
I miss bookstore browsing! I can’t wait for them to open up so I can window shop!
DeleteHuge congratulations on having gone a whole month without buying a single book! I don't think I could do it... And I'm so sorry to hear about the sore knee - you don't have a chance with black ice, do you? I hope the bruising goes down soon, but do have a go at slathering Arnica cream all over it - it really does work and I swear by it... Have a peaceful week, Heather.
ReplyDeleteArnica, I always forget about it, I must get a tube. I used to use in the pre kids days.
DeleteIt’s been quite easy not buying as long as I don’t go near Amazon or bookstores or charity shops!
Ouch! Sorry about that black ice!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about checking Life In Pieces out because it has the actress that played Marie in Breaking Bad and Zoe Lister-Jones, who I just recently discovered via a silly clip in some other actor's Insta and something about her really struck me. I've watched that little clip at least three times, but mainly because of the reaction of another actor in it who is like "What???" Anyway, I see some other great cast members listed on IMDB so yah, I think I need to check it.
I only got as far as Season 2 of The Office before that dang Peacock yanked it off Netflix and put up a pay wall. Sigh. I may have to buy the DVD to finish it.
Hope you have a great first week of February!
Zoe is really good in Life in Pieces, she has such great comedy talent. It’s a brilliant show, I really enjoy it, it never fails to make me laugh.
DeleteBoth the US and UK series of the Office have appeared on Netflix here, I have the US version on in the background all the time.
I have pivoted back to using my library. They have curbside pickup for holds.
ReplyDeleteMy best news is that I and my husband got appointments for our COVID vaccine next week.
The cover of The Shadow in the Glass reminds me of The Night Circus.
That’s great news about the vaccine, I’m glad it seems to be getting rolled out quicker.
DeleteThe weather is playin yo yo here too Hether! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt’s getting warmer here so flooding is now on the cards!
DeleteFalling down as an adult is a misfortune full of all sorts of feelings all at once - pain, shock, embarrassment, trying to pick yourself quick before anyone sees which causes more pain. Remember when you were a kid and could just bounce back up and laugh it off? Glad you had a quiet week. Hope this week is a good one!
ReplyDeleteFalling down as an adult is dreadful, my dad called me the other day to say he’d fallen, it must run in the family!
DeleteI'm sorry about your fall. I can't fall because I am sure I could not get up with my current movement problems. I am so pleased to hear the homeschooling and work from home are going well. Not everyone can handle them.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Homeschooling is going better than expected but I do look forward to the day when they go back to school!
DeleteThe weather has been so bi polar of late I never know what we will get LOL Happy to see that homeschooling is progressing good. And I am so sorry you messed up your knee...hope its on the road to healing, but those embarrassing moments when ppl see you at the lowest are the worst.
ReplyDeleteThankfully I don’t think anyone saw me apart from my dog!
DeleteA quiet week is always good. I'm glad the homeschooling and work are going well. I hope your knee isn't too painful and that it's healing. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThanks Yvonne!
DeleteGlad things are going well. We are watching Discovery of Witches season 2 and Masterpiece Mysteries Miss Scarlet and the Duke. Have a lovely week!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kimberley!
DeleteI really need to watch WandaVision sometime. I've been hearing nothing but good things about that show!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog
Me too, it is on my list!
DeleteSorry to hear about your ice adventure. Hope you are doing okay. I don't buy many books for myself but it seems like they are everywhere anyway. My Sunday Salon post
ReplyDeleteYep, knee is fine, ego just a little bruised!
DeleteBummer about your fall. Black ice is so dangerous! I do also look around for witnesses! I watch The Office a lot as well. My whole family is addicted so it seems like one of us tunes in often.
ReplyDeleteHome After Dark was pretty good! Hope you like it, too. You have a different cover than I remember. Not sure which one I like better.
I think the cover I have must be the UK cover, I preferred the other cover to be honest. I’m enjoying it but it seems to go up and down.
DeleteOuch, hope the bruise heals fast! And yep, I first worry myself about my audience rather than the damage I may be in.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on making it one more into the book buying ban! You'll get there! Glad to hear that work from home and homeschooling are working out well for you.
Yes I am six, seven weeks in and no books bought!
DeleteI'll be venturing outside my garden for the first time since September to take my dad to get the Covid vaccine this week. I'm a nervous wreck but I'm glad he'll be getting the first jab. I won't be getting it for a while I don't think.
ReplyDeleteIt has made me a lot happier, my husband and my dad getting it but you are right I think we will be a lot further down the line.
